Pisa, Italy

When the moon hits your eye like a big pizza pie…. I admit it… The only reason I really went to Pisa was to eat pizza in Pisa. Not the wonky tower, not the University, just for a giggle. As it turns out & luck would have it, it’s quite a nice place.

We stayed in the Grand Hotel Duomo which has a lovely feature staircase in the lobby leading to the chandelier lit bar where the barman proudly tells tales from back in the day when proper celebrities such as Sophia Loren & Frank Sinatra would come to stay. I could have listened to him for hours but there was a roof terrace to explore which offers an excellent view of the magnificent Leaning Tower of Pisa. Our room are a tad ‘vintage’ and could have benefitted from modernisation but I guess if it was good enough for Sophia, it is good enough for me.

Out on the street, Via Santa Maria, there is a superb restaurant called Trattoria Toscana where we had the delicious pizza that we came for before continuing along the same street to the most famous landmark in town.

Before anyone asks, no, I did not go up the tower. I’m not a huge fan of being up high let alone being at a jaunty angle while doing so. It is indeed quite a spectacle but knowing my luck, that would be the day it decided to topple so I decided not to get involved. Photographs taken, we explored the surrounding area of the Cathedral & Duomo and wandered the streets around the River Arno & the train station to get our bearings before our onward journey to Rome as previously blogged. Eventually we ended up at a pedestrianised area with lots of nice cafes and quite a thriving social scene however I have no clue to this day where that was exactly but somehow we found our way back to the hotel for a nightcap thankfully!

I’m sure there is much more to Pisa than what we saw in our short visit but we saw what we needed to which was nice. I would recommend going to see the completely unique Leaning Tower of Pisa for sure but if I’m being honest, I doubt that I would feel inclined to make a return trip. I have been, I have seen, I’m moving on.
