Rome, Italy

Ciao Bella! What better place to start the summer and enjoy La Dolce Vita than The Eternal City. Mama Mia! What a place! Where do we start? The food, the wine, the architecture, the high end designer shops, the history or the people?

To be honest, you will never have a bad meal in Rome so I’m not even going to waste my time making a recommendation. As for accommodation, I’ve had a few hair raising experiences but I’m not one for bashing so just keep your wits about you and if you want a beautiful big Italian marble bathroom, be prepared to pay a premium. In saying that, how much time do you intend to stay in your hotel room when you’re visiting a city as breath taking as Rome? Get out, go exploring & find a clean & comfortable place to crash out once exhaustion takes its toll.

Weekends with Wendy 100% recommends the hop-on hop-off tour if, like me, you’re not staying long. This way you will not miss a thing. The abundance of architecturally stunning places makes this a must. The Colosseum, the Vatican, The Trevi Fountain & Spanish Steps to name but a few. I would say that the Fontana di Trevi is absolutely amazing but don’t buy your gelato here as you will need to remortgage. My best friend was proposed to by her lovely husband here and still treasures the temporary ring purchased at a craft stall as much as her rock, given the spontaneity & romance of the proposal. So that alone should prove what an inspiring sight this is.

My personal favourite is The Piazza Navona. A very cool vibe with the most beautiful backdrop of fountains, statues and an Egyptian Obelisk. I always enjoy a glass of Prosecco and watch the goings on every time from one of the many restaurants on the perimeter.

Another must see, being an Audrey Hepburn fan, is The Bocca della Verita. Featuring in the film Roman Holiday starring Audrey & Gregory Peck, The Mouth of Truth can be found at The Church of Santa Maria in Cosmedin. Legend has it that if a lie is told with one’s hand in the mouth, the hand will be bitten off! Surely an incentive to tell the truth if ever there was one! This scene was re-enacted in the 90’s romcom Only You by Robert Downey Jnr & Marissa Tomei.

I personally have not had a romantic encounter in Rome (with the exception of a few bottom pinches and whistles) however have had wonderful trips with my friends, sister & cousin which have created many memories & funny stories including the time Helena & I got lost amongst the antique shops and cobbled streets having had a few Pinot Grigio at Navona and suddenly realising mid anxiety attack that we were in fact on the Via del Panico which dissolved the situation with the irony and had us in hysterics. From there we found Castel Sant’Angelo & Bridge of Angels which is divine and thereafter took a tipsy stroll around the Piazza San Pietro in the moonlight. Serendipity at its best!

The summer heat makes it necessary to have frequent stops for refreshments which is a great opportunity to admire the effortlessly chic style of the Romans. With names such as Prada, Dolce & Gabbana and Valentino pitching camp in the most fashionable streets around Piazza di Spagna (Spanish Steps) this is a lesson in how to dress. The perfect grooming, the shoes & handbags and the natural good looks are a sight to behold. The passionate conversations punctuated with energetic hand gestures and arms flailing. These people communicate in a completely unique way which is as dramatic as it is theatrical to the average Brit.

As for the history… Really? If you need me to tell you anything about the Roman Empire, you need to go back to school. Gladiators in full costume Rome the streets (roam pun totally intended) near every tourist hotspot cashing in on every selfie available making the wildest Russell Crow fantasy come true!

Seriously, hop on a plane, hire a Vespa and get in about it!

Top Tip : Just relax & enjoy it for what it is.
